Massage Therapy

Massage therapy refers to the techniques used to press, knead and rub muscles and other soft tissues of the body to help release tension. Massage therapy is widely recognized for helping to relieve pain—including chronic pain—, promote relaxation and improve mood.

Various techniques and styles of massage therapy exist, which may include long strokes, kneading, circular movements, and vibrations—characteristic of Swedish massage. Other forms of massage, such as deep tissue massage, may focus on the deepest layers of muscle and soft tissue by using use more firm pressure and slower strokes.* Massage therapy techniques may be tailored to fit the needs of the patient and may vary depending on the expertise and training of the massage therapist.

At Cancer Wellness House, massage therapy sessions are typically one-hour sessions.

*People with cancer should receive approval from their health care provider before receiving deep or intense pressure massage.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific anatomical locations on the skin, typically performed by penetrating the skin with thin needles. The practice of acupuncture can be traced back for millennia and is traditionally based on the idea that patterns of energy flow—known as qi—are essential for good health. This particular premise theorizes that acupuncture is able to correct imbalances in energy flow and thus promote better health.

While different theories exist and vary by culture regarding how exactly acupuncture may work, Western culture and research suggests that the effect of acupuncture may be based on the stimulation and responses between the body’s nervous and endocrine system.

Reiki

Reiki is a type of energy medicine based on the belief that the body has energy fields which interact with its own biological systems in order to promote healing and wellness. It is theorized that reiki can help with nearly any condition, including pain, anxiety, fatigue and depression.

During a reiki session, a practitioner lightly places their hands on or just above a person with the intent of facilitating a person’s healing response through their energy fields. It is a simple and safe complementary health approach, with no evidence base of known side effects.

Gentle Yoga

Yoga is a practice originating in ancient Indian philosophy that involves both mind and body. It combines deliberate physical movements and poses with breathing exercises and meditation.

Yoga is often practiced with the intent to improve physical fitness, relieve stress and maintain general health and well-being. Many people also practice yoga to help address other, more specific health conditions, including back and/or neck pain, arthritis or anxiety.

At Cancer Wellness House, Gentle Yoga classes are designed for those who want to practice yoga at a slower pace, with basic instruction and extra support for stability and balance. Prior experience is not necessary and each participant will be accommodated at their own level.

Counseling

Counseling is a process during which patients interact with a trained therapist to explore and articulate feelings, beliefs, behaviors, etc. in order to better understand themselves, set personal goals and identify ways to cope with major life challenges.

Many people with cancer experience side effects of both disease and treatment which may lead to extreme levels of emotional distress and potential mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety and even post-traumatic stress disorder. Anyone who may be experiencing these effects firsthand—or who may be affected indirectly—can benefit from counseling.

Counseling sessions at Cancer Wellness House are led by a certified LCSW, CSW, or MSW student (with supervision). Clients can participate in counseling sessions individually, as a couple or as a family. Sessions will be cancer-focused.
